<h1>Big-Time Email Copywriting Mistakes &#8211; Part Two<strong><em> </em></strong></h1>

<p>For a moment, let’s pretend you’re witnessing a conversation I’m  having in a bar with a few aspiring email copywriters.</p>
<p>After I’ve had a few drinks, these men and women realize I am about  “three sheets to the wind.”</p>
<p>They figure the moment is NOW – so they pop the question: “Furey,  without all the B.S., what’s the single biggest <strong>email copywriting</strong> mistake you see people making?”</p>
<p>Being that I’m feeling totally uninhibited – which is my normal  state anyway (but who’s checking?) – I don’t hold back. Without  hesitation, I say, “The biggest mistake of them all is over-teaching in  your emails. Let’s be honest, teachers aren’t very highly paid. There’s  no money in the profession. But there is big money in copywriting,  especially email copywriting – and it’s the easiest way for a copywriter  to hit six figures per year.”</p>
<p>When you hear this, your eyes pop with amazement. You can no longer  stand on the sidelines and watch. You jump into the conversation to say,  “But I heard an email needs to be loaded with content. I heard it needs to teach.”</p>
<p>“It needs to teach all right,” I reply. “It needs to teach people to  sit up and pay close attention to everything you write. It needs to  teach people to be in AWE – to be mesmerized. It needs to teach people  how to laugh again, how to enjoy life, how to be inspired to reach for  the stars and go for it. But anything beyond that is over-teaching – and  when you over-teach, you cannot sell anything. That is where the fine  line gets blurred.”</p>
<p>We’ve all heard the roar about giving away the store in terms of  free content in order to woo the buyer to purchase our products. But  that’s NOT the best strategy. And so, as an email copywriter, you need  to be keenly aware of this important distinction.</p>
<p>Write copy that teaches too much, and sales suffer.</p>
<p>Write copy that gets the reader curious, excited, and eager for more  – then sales will BOOM and those you’re writing for will love you.</p>
<p>The good news is that YOU – as an email copywriter – will NOT have  to do boatloads of research for your client in order to write stunning,  money-drenching emails. You simply have to be able to relax and write a  good story. And that is incredibly easy to do when you learn my method  for writing emails.</p>

<p>Easy answer: If you’re NOT teaching in your emails – no need for a  ton of research. Leave that to those who create the products you are  promoting.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Creating successful <strong>email marketing campaigns</strong></em><em> is all about building quality relationships with subscribers rather than trying to get as many sales as you can before they hit the unsubscribe link. Many of you may know that a large part of nailing that relationship is to connect with your subscribers and to keep them entertained. But did you also know that it involves avoiding common mistakes overlooked by many marketers.<br />
</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em>In this 2-part <strong>email copywriting</strong> article, Matt  Furey </em><em>- the self acclaimed &#8216;Zen Master of the Internet&#8217; </em><em> -  takes you through the biggest email copywriting mistakes to avoid.</em><em> Now I will warn you &#8211; most people either LOVE Matt&#8217;s aggressive style or are downright  insulted by it. However, despite the love/hate reactions he arouses you cannot  deny his methods are entertaining, and better still &#8211;  GET RESULTS. </em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em>Pay close attention to these accomplished <strong>email copywriting tips</strong> from this bombastic email copywriter and you will guarantee </em><em>your emails always leave an impression  closer to mesmerizing rather than bordering on the mundane.</em><em> </em></p>
<h1 style="text-align: left;">Big-Time Email Copywriting Mistakes &#8211; Part One</h1>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><span style="font-size: small;"><em>By Matt Furey</em></span></strong></p>
<p>Before I begin teaching you how to write a money-drenching email in  10-12 minutes, there&#8217;s something you need to know. And that &#8220;something&#8221;  is all the mistakes made by almost everyone.</p>
<p>Thing is, you might not think what you see in so many emails is a  mistake, because … &#8220;everyone is doing it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, as your mother probably told you once or twice – perhaps when  you got caught smoking – &#8220;Just because you THINK everyone is doing it  doesn&#8217;t make it right.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bear with me for a moment. I realize what I&#8217;ve written above may  come off as arrogant. It may come off as &#8220;I know everything&#8221; and  everyone else is wrong. Not my point.</p>
<p>My point is, I have a different take on this matter of <strong>Email  Copywriting</strong>, and I have a different point of view for a damn good  reason: My emails kick butt – and those who follow what I teach quickly  learn to do what I&#8217;m doing.</p>
<p>So let&#8217;s suspend judgment about me being pompous, at least  momentarily, and concentrate on whether or not you can learn something  from me. Deal?</p>
<p>Okay. Then let me start by covering three major mistakes that I see  being made in many, many emails – mistakes that make the reader stop  reading. Not something you want to happen, right?</p>
<p><strong>1. Subject line ALWAYS begins with my first name.</strong></p>
<p>For example, I sign up for your email tips. And every time you email  me, the subject line or &#8220;headline&#8221; says something like, &#8220;Matt, Top 3  Ways to Burn Fat.&#8221; Or, &#8220;Matt, How Do You Make Money Online?&#8221;</p>
<p>Just like someone who doesn&#8217;t know you but uses your name over and  over and over again – this technique is over-used. It may bump sales  once or twice, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you use it EVERY TIME. As I learned  in kung-fu years ago, &#8220;A strength over-extended becomes a weakness.&#8221;  Using some-one&#8217;s name is good salesmanship. Using it every time you send  an email to them is not.</p>
<p><strong>2. Top of message lists the contents of the email.</strong></p>
<p>Why on earth do I need to see the contents of an email at the top of  the email? Instead, why not suck me into your universe with powerful,  riveting copy. Chances are excellent that when I see the &#8220;contents&#8221;  listed I will quickly scan and say, &#8220;Ah, not for me&#8221; … and move on. Not  only that, but part of being an effective email copywriter lies in your  ability to convey warmth. How warm is a table of contents at the top of  an email?</p>
<p><strong>3.  First sentence is boring, dull, or too long to keep me jazzed.</strong></p>
<p>After someone reads your subject line and opens your email, you must  not take anything for granted. Your first sentence has to be powerful.  It must arrest the attention of the reader and make him so curious he  has to keep reading.</p>
<p>For example, here&#8217;s an opening sentence I read a few minutes ago in a  recent email, followed by what I wrote to make it more compelling:</p>
<p>First sentence: &#8220;Do you know someone who will be going into surgery  soon?</p>
<p>My rewrite: &#8220;Surgery sucks. Especially open-heart surgery. I know  people who almost died from it. Some who have.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, you might say, &#8220;Hey, Furey, you cheated. You wrote four  sentences instead of one. And some of your sentences aren&#8217;t  grammatically correct. They&#8217;re not even sentences. Your English teacher  would have flunked you for what you wrote.&#8221;</p>
<p>And in reply I&#8217;d say, &#8220;My English teacher never made a dime from her  writing. I make plenty.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most difficult, but key components of the <strong>Internet marketing</strong> process is to design your website to achieve the goals you have set for your business.  However, most business people ignore this critical step, or leave it to their web designer to take care of, which can often be even worse.</p>
<p>By strategically planning your new website or an update of your existing website, you will ensure you have a marketing piece that showcases your business to its best, allows you to be in control of ongoing content updates, and achieves the goals you have set for your business.  Here are a few steps to use in the planning process:</p>
<h4><strong>1. Website Information</strong></h4>
<p>List all the information about your product or service that a visitor to your website might be interested in knowing. Using the website for a school, for an example, you would probably discover that visitors would be looking for information on the staff at the school, classroom size, attendance numbers, and sports programs.  Brainstorm every possible topic someone might want to know related to the industry, product or service your website will be offering.</p>
<h4><strong>2. Website Visitor</strong></h4>
<p>Take on the role of your website visitor. Visit and review some websites similar to the one you will offer as if you were a potential customer.  As a visitor who is genuinely interested in your product or service, what are the good things and bad things about each site you visit?  Are you driven to take action?  Can you find what you are looking for fast? Are there a lot of pages to navigate through to get to what you are looking for?  Note all this data down with the intent of making your new website as easy for your visitors to use as possible.</p>
<h4><strong>3. Keyword Research</strong></h4>
<p>Do keyword research to find out what visitors will be searching for. Google has a <a href="https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?PHPSESSID=63bec0babf51efc9fd0e1337fcc20b4a" target="_self">free keyword research tool</a> that will work fine for this purpose.  Type in a general phrase such as “high school” and see what other keywords come up.  These are the things your visitors already have questions about.  By arming yourself with this information, you will be able to plan your website to answer their questions right away.</p>
<h4><strong>4. Flexible Web Format</strong></h4>
<p>When planning your new website, make sure to keep room to grow. Don&#8217;t be lured into a website format that won&#8217;t let you expand easily to add new content pages or products.  You will find that building a great website is a constant work in progress.</p>
<h4><strong>5. Web Management</strong></h4>
<p>The final thing to keep in mind is that you want to be able to control your new website, rather than be at the mercy of your web designer to make even the simplest of changes.</p>
<p>Successful Internet marketing today relies on a dynamic website with fresh content added often, and having an antiquated website that only your designer can change will just not work anymore.  Your new website should be on a platform that lets you add content quickly and easily.</p>

<p>This is an easy headline to write. You are calling out to your specific target audience. This is very effective particularly if your product is in a small niche.</p>

<p>People always want to know what is in it for them. When you state the benefits or results your customer will receive from your product you will capture their attention instantly.</p>
<p><strong>4. The Captivating Question</strong></p>

<p>The trick here is to ask an intriguing open ended question. In other words a question that cannot be answered with either “yes” or “no”. If your reader can answer your question with a yes or no, you risk losing them. They have no need read further.</p>
<p><strong>5. The ‘How To’ Headline</strong></p>

<li>How to Tell When Your      Teenager is Lying</li>
<li>How to Win Friends and      Influence People</li>

<p>This one is extremely popular on the internet. People go online to search for information. By placing a ‘how to’ in your headline you are meeting them exactly where their heads are at (<em>hint hint</em>).</p>
<p>Here is a little secret I’ll let you in on.</p>
<p>Professional copywriters steal headlines from other successful ads. Yes that’s right.</p>
<p>Although you wouldn’t technically call it ‘stealing.’  What they do is copy the framework of successful ads and then adapt them to suit their own product.</p>
<p>They also use what is called their “swipe file.” This is a collection of ads, headlines and copy that they like. When it is time for them to write a headline, they instantly have a treasure trove of great ideas to help them write their powerful headline.</p>
<p>Once you start looking at copy from a copywriter’s perspective you will notice how many headlines get used over and over again. These are the ones that work. Take note and write them down!  Add them to your own Swipe File.</p>
<p>Continue to study and model successful copywriters. But don’t mimic their style exactly. Always be sure to use your own voice and let your personality shine through the text.</p>
