If you love the idea of working from home, being around your children, or having flexible hours, then this is your dream job.

How to Become a Copywriter?

There are a few ways you can enter the world of copywriting. In my research, I’ve noticed that advice regarding the best course of action can vary. I believe your choice will depend on your current situation,  and how you plan to use your copywriting skills.

For instance, if you’re a school leaver, then doing an internship or a degree, are probably your best choices. But if you’re an adult seeking a career change, or adding to your skills, then a copywriting course is ideal.

Copywriting Careers

To kick-start your career consider one or more of the following:

Sales Experience

If you have never worked in sales before it’s a good idea to get some experience. It will give you firsthand knowledge of the sales process and you’ll understand the importance of selling the benefits and closing a sale.

College Degree

It is not necessary to have a college degree, however, it will give you a competitive edge if you want to get into an ad agency.  Look for an Arts Degrees with copywriting in its curriculum.

Copywriting Internship

Securing a copywriting internship within an ad agency will give you copywriting experience on a daily basis. This is a great way to build up your portfolio of work and gain insight into the industry.

Copywriting Courses

There are some highly regarded copywriting courses available online. The great thing about them is you get coaching from professionals who are currently practicing and profiting from what they preach. Plus you can start to learning and using your copywriting skills immediately.

Build a Copy Portfolio

Every copywriter, even an aspiring one, needs a portfolio. If you’re just starting out, create some spec ads. You could also offer to write free copy for friends, family and business colleagues. The sooner you have work samples, the sooner you can attract clients.

Immerse Yourself in Copy

Start immersing yourself in as much copy you can get your hands on . Read copywriting books, newspapers and magazines, listen to television and radio scripts. Rather than throw out junk mail you can now use it as resource. Collect clever pieces of copy and put them in a swipe file.

Freelance Copywriting Opportunities

There are plenty of opportunities for freelance copywriting. A good place to start looking is online. Internet marketers always need copywriters for sales letters, email newsletters, pay-per-click and banner ads. Approach local businesses and offer your skills to write their newspaper and direct mail ads. Many freelances also register with online agencies and bid for proposals from clients.
